Modern transport infrastructure demands efficient, compliant and well-coordinated lifting solutions. Whether involved in carriageway improvements, bridge replacements or major civil upgrades, mobile cranes remain a critical asset, offering the flexibility and reliability required for operation in constrained and often high-risk environments.
Emerson Cranes supplies crane hire and contract lifting services to contractors and public sector partners across the South East. Emerson Cranes is a trusted partner for infrastructure projects of all sizes and complexity, as demonstrated by our recent involvement in the Gallows Corner flyover dismantling project, carried out under tight timelines and regulatory scrutiny.
Mobile Cranes for Infrastructure and Highways Projects
Lifting operations on live highways and within public access zones require lifting solutions that are both technically capable and logistically efficient. Mobile cranes provide:
- Rapid deployment to reduce project downtime
- Compact dimensions for operation in restricted or urban sites
- Flexible lifting capacity across multiple project phases
- Compatibility with night works and scheduled road closures
Emerson’s fleet includes cranes suited to a wide range of infrastructure tasks, from light utility access lifts to complex bridge installations, available on both short-term and long-term hire agreements.
Project Snapshot: Gallows Corner Flyover Removal, Romford
The Gallows Corner flyover, originally installed in the 1970s as a temporary structure, had reached the end of its serviceable life. Transport for London (TfL) commissioned its removal to address weight and safety issues, improve journey times and prevent future unplanned closures at this major East London junction.
Initial site works began in May 2025, with the junction fully closed from 23 June. The dismantling phase commenced in early July, during which Emerson Cranes deployed two Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 mobile cranes for day and night lifting operations. Once the initial spans and panels were removed, a Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 took over to complete the heavier lifting tasks.
Lifting works were predominantly scheduled overnight to reduce disruption, and although the road closure caused delays on surrounding routes, the local community remained highly supportive. Residents expressed appreciation for both the professionalism of the on-site team and the performance of the cranes involved.
The works were delivered under tight timelines and in a confined urban setting, requiring close coordination with local authorities, detailed planning and specialist equipment tailored for restricted access.

Equipment Focus: Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 & Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1
Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1
This 230-tonne all-terrain crane offers an excellent combination of lifting power, height and manoeuvrability, making it ideal for dismantling flyovers and supporting infrastructure projects in dense urban environments.
Key specifications:
- 230T maximum lifting capacity
- 75m telescopic boom
- 5-axle configuration for enhanced mobility
- Excellent performance at high hook heights
- Ideal for projects requiring reach and compact setup
Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1
The LTM 1450-8.1 is Emerson’s largest all-terrain crane, offering immense lifting capacity with the flexibility needed for rapid deployment in space-constrained conditions.
Key features:
- 450T maximum lifting capacity
- 85m telescopic boom
- Electro-hydraulic rear axle steering for enhanced turning capability
- VarioBase® outrigger system for safe setup on limited sites
- Road legal with full hoist winch and supports onboard
- Fast setup and repositioning on site
Both machines proved essential during the Gallows Corner works, demonstrating the importance of matching crane capability to site conditions and project demands.
Contract Lifting with Full Legislative Compliance
Infrastructure projects demand more than capable machinery: they require thorough planning, detailed risk management and full regulatory compliance. Emerson Cranes provides a comprehensive contract lifting service, managing every stage of the lifting process.
The contract lifting service includes:
- Appointed Person-led planning, including site surveys and method statements in line with BS7121
- Risk assessments, traffic management integration and toolbox talks
- Documentation in compliance with LOLER and PUWER
- Permit acquisition, including traffic and access permissions from local authorities and agencies such as TfL
- Coordination with utilities, main contractors and local stakeholders where shared access is required
All lifting operations are delivered by CPCS-certified operators, with supervision from experienced lift supervisors and slinger/signallers. Standard procedure includes full post-lift documentation and reporting.
This service model ensures all lifting works are compliant, auditable and aligned with local authority and main contractor standards.
Long-Term Crane Hire for Extended Programmes
Emerson Cranes offers long-term crane hire packages for infrastructure projects requiring a consistent on-site lifting solution across multiple project phases. This is particularly beneficial for bridge construction, motorway upgrades and phased civil works.
Advantages of long-term hire include:
- Continual lifting capability across the duration of the programme
- Reduced mobilisation and de-mobilisation overheads
- Dedicated equipment availability, aligned with the client’s schedule
- Ongoing technical support and equipment familiarity across repeat tasks
Hire terms are flexible and structured around project programme requirements and delivery timelines.
