Project Overview:
Emerson was recently contracted to support the dismantling of the Gallows Corner flyover, a key stage in Transport for London’s infrastructure upgrade programme. The job involved complex heavy lifting operations and required a reliable, expert-led crane hire solution.
With full road closures in place and widespread public interest, Emerson deployed its specialist team and fleet to manage the safe removal of large sections of the flyover, including concrete deck panels and steel superstructure. Two Liebherr LTM 1230 mobile cranes were used initially for day and night lifting operations. These were later replaced by the larger Liebherr LTM 1450 8.1, capable of handling the heaviest elements.
Throughout the works, Emerson’s calm, collaborative approach ensured smooth coordination with TfL and minimal disruption to the surrounding community. Local residents even expressed appreciation for the professionalism and skill of our team on the ground.

Project Outline:
Originally built in the 1970s as a temporary structure, the Gallows Corner flyover had long exceeded its expected service life. Deterioration had led to speed and weight restrictions, and TfL identified complete removal and replacement as the most efficient long-term solution. Emerson was brought in to manage the lift required to dismantle the structure safely and efficiently.
Work began in June following the full closure of the roundabout and surrounding junctions. Emerson deployed two Liebherr LTM 1230 5.1 cranes, each capable of lifting up to 230 tonnes, to manage the first phase of removal. These versatile all-terrain cranes offered both reach and manoeuvrability, making them ideal for the constrained urban site.
Once the initial lifts were complete, the more powerful Liebherr LTM 1450 8.1 took over. This 450-tonne mobile crane, equipped with an 85-metre telescopic boom, provided the muscle needed for the project’s most demanding heavy lifting tasks. Its advanced steering and fast setup time made it especially well suited for the dynamic demands of the site.
Project Success & Positive Feedback:
Thanks to detailed planning and expert execution, the Gallows Corner flyover removal progressed safely, efficiently and according to programme. With the foundations now underway, the replacement structure is scheduled for construction in the coming weeks.
This project demonstrates Emerson’s capability to deliver a complete crane hire solution on high-profile, complex infrastructure projects. Our continued collaboration with TfL reflects their confidence in our ability to deliver top-tier crane services in challenging environments.
Feedback from stakeholders and the public alike has been overwhelmingly positive, not just about the progress of the works, but also about the professionalism and visibility of our cranes and crew throughout the project.
