Start ’em Young

There is a lot of truth in the old saying […]

There is a lot of truth in the old saying “Start ‘em young”, a fine example of that is Tommy Jackson, whose dad has been at Emerson for 32 years and worked his way up to be Operations Director. He fuelled Tommy’s passion from a young age and once Tommy left School it was a natural step into Emerson and he began his career in September 2016 at the age of 16 years old.

As for now, he is working towards his NVQ which will earn him a blue CPCS card. Once he turns 18 he will also start on his LGV Class 2 licence which will allow him to drive Mobile cranes on the road.

Tommy’s hard work and dedication along with the skills and knowledge of his instructors and supervisors has meant that he is most likely the youngest A66, A60 and A62 qualified operator in the country and has a long and very promising career here at Emerson.

Tommy Jackson

We spoke to Tommy to find out more about his journey here at Emerson:

Q: At what age did you realise you wanted to get into the crane industry?

T: “It wasn’t until I was 16 that I really knew I wanted to get into the industry”.

Q: Did you ever want to be something other than a crane driver?

T: “No, I never really thought about doing anything else”.

Q: Which element of your job do you enjoy the most?

T: “I guess I enjoy the Slinger/Signaller role the most, there is always plenty of variety in the role and we are working on something different every day”.

Q: What are you long term goals for your career at Emerson?

T: “I’m looking forward to passing my HGV tests and becoming a full time Crane driver”.

Q: What’s the best thing about working for Emerson?

T: “I really enjoy being in different places every day, it makes the job challenging but also very interesting”.

Of course, Tommy could not have achieved all this on his own, Emerson’s training centre have been at the heart of Tommy’s journey and instrumental at instilling in him the high standards and commitment to safety that Emerson stands for. When speaking to the people responsible for Tommy’s development, they told us:

“When Tommy came to the Training Centre to study his A40 Slinger Signaller card, we were impressed by his commitment and maturity. Tommy was able to utilise his knowledge and apply the theory to his work and demonstrated a genuine interest and flare for the role and we were happy to facilitate his learning through A60 and A62. At Emerson Training Centre, our trainers are skilled in working with people of all levels and experiences.  We specialise in CPCS training and work with some of the most experienced trainers in the industry.  Our standards are high, and this is what sets our training centre above the rest.  We are committed to ensure that Tommy and others like him are given the skills and knowledge to grow in the industry and maintain high safety standards expected. We are looking forward to Tommy completing his NVQ with us and progressing further in his career.”
